on thyroxine-binding proteins (UTBP), T4 bound to thyroxine-binding proteins (PBI or TBPT4) andfree thyroxine (FT4). thyroid status. This is shown in diagrammatic fashion in fig 1 which illustrates the changes that occur in thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism and in those situations where there are alterations in thyroxine-binding protein capacity, such as the increase in thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) that accompanies pregnancy. The PBI and T4 and their variants define merely one aspect of thyroid hormone secretion and there are other tests available which may be better for evaluating thyroid status, for example, free thyroxine in serum (FT4) (Ingbar, Braverman, Dawber, and Lee, 1965; Sterling and Brenner, 1966), total and free serum triiodothyronine (Sterling, Bellabarba, Newman, and Brenner, 1969; Chopra, Solomon, and Beall, 1971; Mitsuma, Nikei, Gershengorn, and Hollander, 1971; Jacobs, Mackie, Eastman, Ellis, Ekins, and McHardy-Young, 1973), and urinary thyroxine and triiodothyronine (Chan and Landon, 1972; Chan, Besser, Landon, and Ekins, 1972; Burke, Shakespear, and Fraser, 1972) (table I).

Study on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine
Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...

Genetically determined thyroxine-binding globulin deficiency is described in two families in the United Kingdom. All subjects in both pedigrees were euthyroid. Transmission was by sex-linkage; males showed low serum protein bound iodine and high thyroxine (T4) resin uptake due to complete absence of serum thryroxine-binding globulin; females were less severely affected. The distinctive biochemi...
متن کاملThe concentration and significance of the butanol-extractable I131 of serum in patients with diverse states of thyroidal function.
Thyroxine, if not truly the active thyroid hormone ( 1, 2) is clearly the principal iodine-containing compound released by the thyroid gland, and ordinarily comprises the largest fraction of the plasma's protein-bound iodine (3-6). Many investigators have, therefore, attempted to assess thyroidal function by measuring the concentration of protein-bound I'll (PB1181) in the plasma following the ...

متن کاملSerum free thyroxine and free triiodothyronine concentrations in pregnancy.
Blood was taken from women in each trimester of pregnancy at routine antenatal visits. Further samples were collected from an age matched control group of euthyroid women taking no medication. Free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine concentrations were measured by direct radioimmunoassay (Amerlex Kit methods, Amersham International, Amersham, Buckinghamshire).2 These free hormone assays use th...
